Who levelled up?

Read on for a selection of the year’s fastest growing gaming apps that were able to finish the year in a winning position. Some defined the year’s trends, some were able to capitalise on 2016 events – but they all gained in popularity.

Pokémon Go – none of us could ignore the Pokémon phenomenon this year, as the app brought AR into the light, emphasising that users are ready to embrace and run – literally – with this technology. It was a game best experienced together, and we’ll wait to see if another app is able to seamlessly employ AR technology this year.

Clash Royale was another hit for the Finnish Supercell that was acquired in 2016 by Chinese company Tencent – the developers best known for comms stalwart WeChat. Clash Royal was also one of the highest grossing games of the year. Royale Flush indeed.

The popularity of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games app was down to South Korean developer NEOWIZ ability to capitalise on Olympic fever in the summer. Launched a short period of time before the Games kicked off in Rio, their success and inclusion in FGA emphasizes the importance of leveraging exciting events to generate an increase in downloads and leverage the existing buzz.
